During IRCC’s second draw this week, the department granted 1,400 Invitations to Apply (ITAs) to eligible candidates proficient in French and having a minimum Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score of 410. This marks the first draw focusing on French proficiency since last month’s draw on March 26, 2024.

Today’s draw follows a general Express Entry draw conducted yesterday, April 23, 2024, where IRCC issued 2,095 ITAs to candidates with a minimum CRS score of 529.

What is Express Entry

Express Entry is IRCC’s platform for managing applications for three distinct economic-class permanent residence (PR) programs: the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP), the Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP), and the Canadian Experience Class (CEC). It now allocates Invitations to Apply (ITAs) to immigration candidates through three types of draws: general, program-specific, and category-based.

General and Program-specific Express Entry Draws have been integral to the Express Entry system since its inception in 2015, emphasizing the selection of Canadian immigration candidates with the highest CRS scores.

Express Entry Draws: General and Program-Specific

CRS scores are numerical values assigned by the department to candidates eligible for Express Entry, based on various factors such as age, education, and work experience.

Once an Express Entry candidate confirms eligibility for at least one of IRCC’s three managed programs, they can create an online profile. At this stage, they receive their CRS score and await the next Express Entry draw by IRCC to determine if they will receive an ITA.

Candidates need a CRS score exceeding the department’s cut-off for a particular draw to receive an ITA. ITAs are crucial as they allow candidates to submit their electronic Application for Permanent Residence (eAPR) to IRCC, serving as the gateway to applying for PR in Canada.

Category-Based Express Entry Draws

IRCC introduced a new draw type called category-based draws starting from June 2023. These draws aim to attract specific types of Canadian immigration candidates with targeted work experience and skills, aligning with the demands of the Canadian labor market and demographic trends.

IRCC has identified certain categories of candidates to focus on welcoming to Canada through these draws. These include eligible foreign nationals with:

  • Work experience in Healthcare
  • Work experience in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM)
  • Work experience in Trades
  • Work experience in Transport
  • Work experience in Agriculture and Agri-Food
  • Proficiency in the French language

Note: French language proficiency, as defined by IRCC, requires a minimum score of 7 in all four language abilities according to the Niveaux de compétence linguistique canadiens (NCLC).
