How LMIAs Can Boost Your CRS Points as an Express Entry applicant

Express Entry is Canada’s primary system for managing applications for permanent residence from skilled workers. It includes three federal programs:

  • Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP): For skilled workers with foreign experience.
  • Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP): For skilled tradespeople with job offers or certifications.
  • Canadian Experience Class (CEC): For applicants with Canadian work experience.

While CEC candidates do not need LMIAs to qualify, obtaining one can be beneficial. A valid job offer supported by LMIAs can add significant Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) points to any Express Entry profile, increasing the likelihood of receiving an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residency from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).

Recent Changes and Updates

Immigration Minister Marc Miller and Employment Minister Randy Boissonnault announced changes to Canada’s Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP).

Effective May 1, the validity period of Labour Market Impact Assessments (LMIAs) will revert to the pre-pandemic standard of six months. This reverses the temporary extension to 12 months introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic to ease labor market conditions.
