Navigating the process of family sponsorship can be a complex and demanding journey, particularly when it comes to financial requirements. This article delves into the specifics of the MNI, its calculation, and its implications for those seeking to reunite with their loved ones through family sponsorship programs.
About MNI?
The Minimum Necessary Income (MNI) is a financial threshold established by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada to ensure that a sponsor has sufficient income to support themselves and their dependents without needing social assistance. Applicants for family sponsorship must meet the MNI requirements for their family size to be deemed eligible to sponsor their relatives.
There are some key points of Minimum Necessary Income:
- Income Proof: Sponsors need to provide proof of their income, typically through tax documents like Notices of Assessment from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA).
- Income Sources: The income considered can come from various sources, including employment, self-employment, and other legal sources of income. Social assistance is generally not counted towards this income.
- Duration Requirement: Sponsors may need to demonstrate that they have met the MNI for a specified period, like last one or three years.
- Household Size: The required income level varies depending on the size of the sponsor’s household, including the number of people being sponsored and the sponsor’s current dependents.
